Sakana AI is a Tokyo-based R&D company, in July 2023 by David Ha and Llion Jones, who previously worked on AI research at Google. On a quest to create a new kind of foundational AI model based on nature-inspired intelligence. Founders David Ha and Llion Jones are pushing the bounds of AI research by exploring alternative approaches to foundation models that are more adaptive and resilient. Japan’s Sakana AI, backed by NVIDIA, has raised about 30 billion yen (roughly US$214 million) in its Series A funding round, putting its valuation at US$1.5 billion, merely a year post-launch.

AI Scientist – AI language model-based system
Sakana AI has announced a new AI system called“ AI Scientist” that attempts to autonomously conduct scientific research using an AI language model (LLM) similar to the one powered by ChatGPT. During testing, Sakana discovered that its system unexpectedly started trying to modify its own experimental code to prolong problem-solving.

NVIDIA invests in Japanese AI company Sakana AI
NVIDIA participates in over $100 million funding campaign for Tokyo-based AI startup Sakana AI. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said he was attracted to Sakana’s push to popularize AI in Japan, which was founded last year by two former Google engineers and which the company says will partner with NVIDIA on research, drive data center access and build a local AI community.
